A week ago, a took my nieces to get some drinks at Sonic, and then I took them swimming at the neighborhood pool. Afterwards, I get out and get a drink from my Sonic cup. I start chewing and sucking on a strawberry chunk when I realize:

"Hey, I got a cranberry slush. There shouldn't be strawberries."

In my optimism I think: "Sweet! Bonus strawberry." But after some more chewing, I notice it's not dissolving the same way as a strawberry (or tasting the same way). I spit it back into the cup, and black chunks of a LARGE fly come out of my mouth. I spit again and the legs come out. I guess it had made its way down the large straw before I came by and introduced it to my tongue. I was disgusted for the next half an hour because I couldn't get the fly taste out of my mouth.

Moral of the story: There are no bonus strawberries at Sonic.

Cool Story

So while keeping score in the pool league, I start making chit-chat with this older lady on the other team. Somehow, we end up talking about how she grew up on a cemetery in New York. Intrigued, I asked her more about it. One story was pretty amazing... so amazing I'm staying up to share it with you. I'll try to keep it short.

Background: Four houses were built on a plot of land and then the rest of the surrounding land was bought and made into a cemetery. Leah (the lady telling me the story) and her family lived in one of those houses. Now, this isn't a creepy, old cemetery. It's the kind that is nicely kept... so nicely kept that it trumped the nicest parks around. And that's what her and the other kids used it as. They would climb on the mausoleums, play in the trees, and run around on the clean-cut grass.

Story: When she was in grade school, they noticed that the cemetery was beginning to use a large section that had been kept empty. One day they saw a tombstone that was placed in the ground. It was the kind that was flat to the ground, much like a plaque. And what do you do when something like this is placed in your "backyard"? You got it! They made it home plate and started to play baseball.

While playing, her and her friends noticed a woman sitting under a nearby tree, just watching them. She would stand and sit back down, but kept watching them the whole time. Out of curiosity and respect, Leah goes over to the woman to see what's going on. Here's the conversation:

"Are we bothering you?"
"No, you're not bothering me. But my husband just passed away and you're using his tombstone as home plate."
"OH! I'm sorry! We'll stop..."
"No. Don't stop. You see, my husband loved baseball and played little league, high school, and coached little leagues all of his life. I want you to keep playing baseball here, but you have to promise that, no matter what, you always use him as home plate. I know he would be happy to be home plate."

And so they did. They continued to play there and use that tombstone as home plate.

Doesn't it sound like one of those stories you make into a chain letter and send to your friends? But it's not! It's a real story from this lady. I'm sure some of the story was lost in translation, but when we heard the story, it was really heart warming (and gave us chills at the same time). Seems so perfect, like God had a purpose in letting it unfold the way it did.

Wow! An update...

Update on things. All good stuff!

ACC Youth retreat was great. I'm sure you'll see pictures circling around. Here are some good ones from Kat. I need to learn from her! We did some things differently and the outcome was pretty cool. I was also the counselor for some great guys that will be going to college soon. Good luck, guys!

Here's the team we had for games. We reenacted how we protected Janie from getting splashed with water in this game Peter made up. Fun game! Jamba Jamba! Total Domination!

I finally won the volleyball tournament we have every year at my company! It felt so good because the final team we played against was talking trash, even before the season started. The other team was pretty good, but we were better... MU HA HA HA....

I've been earning some extra cash by helping a friend with her food delivery service. If you ever want to order food, ask for me. Maybe I'll show up at your door with your food! You better tip me well though. www.dineondemandonline.com

My pool team is currently number one in our league. Everyone on the team has been playing real well. This is Jen Jen's first time on the team and she's rockin'! Here is a promised picture from my last post:

I've been in a pool league for over two years and today we actually won first place at our location. Doesn't sound horribly impressive, but we beat this team that has been crushing us all session long. Not only that, but this team was really cocky and rude, and they thought they had it in the bag. It felt so good to school them. I had the pleasure of winning the last game, and I was SHAKING even after I sunk the last 8 ball. I celebrated with some Plucker's wings.

Here's a crappy picture from my phone. I'll post a better one later (hopefully).

Update on my life:
New phone and new car. Those are big for me because I hold on to old things as long as they're functional.
New position at work.
My parents finally sold my childhood home. (sadness....)
Been playing volleyball non-stop... and the summer is just beginning!

Congrats to all those graudating. Remember me when you're rich and famous.

Friday, February 10, 2006

The day has come. I'll post pictures when I get back.

For New Years Eve, we had a casino party at Nick, Stephen, and Steven's apartment. I brought out my casino gear and Bellagi-Wong (or the Phil-mingo) was open again for one night. People came over to play craps, blackjack, and roulette. Most people never played craps before, so it was fun teaching and seeing everyone roll with it and have fun.

And the food was amazing! We went all out with the food and the champagne. We also had a chocolate fountain with all the goodies to dip into it. It was a good time of friends and fun. I will post pictures of it when I get some from others. If you have pictures of the night, I want some!

Have a great year everyone. Eat your black-eyed peas on New Year's Day!!! That's my secret to my charmed life. There you go... the secret is out.

Tuesday, November 22, 2005

Here's a quick summary of the past month:
1) I hurt my wrist, which made me sad because I had to stop playing volleyball for a while.
2) I celebrated my birthday with some bowling and my friends plotting to throw me in the shower. Birthday-shower-throwing has been a long practiced tradition between us.
3) Had all-you-can-eat Pluckers for the first time. I got my money's worth, but I felt dizzy afterwards. I'll do it again though :)
4) Went to Wurstfest and ate a lot of different kinds of sausage.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Eat lots of turkey with sticky rice stuffing.

Sunday, October 16, 2005

On my way back to Dallas, some faster cars passed me so I started following them. The trick, as everyone knows, is to use these daring drivers as your "police buffer" because cops would catch them first. I decided not to go so fast and slow down to a more conservative speed. Five minutes later I find myself alone on the highway and a cop pulls me over for doing 81 in a 65. Come on! I saw grandmas driving faster than me.

So if anyone wants to take defensive driving with me, give me a holler. I could do it online, but I want to try something different. Comedy club? Ryan's Steakhouse?

On the plus side, I went to the Texas State Fair, which I haven't been to since I was in elementary school. I got to try the fried snickers bar, fried cheesecake, fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, corny dog, etc (see the trend here?). I also got to meet two of the Dallas Maverick Dancers! Let me tell you this story:

I waited in line and finally got to Kim. They were signing posters and I wanted her to spell my name correctly since I'm probably going to frame this on my wall . I said "Philip... with one L." She wrote my name... P-H-I-L... and stopped to check again with me that it was with one L. I said yes and was impressed that she was so considerate in making sure my name was spelled correctly. She then proceeded to write -U-P.

PHILUP? P-H-I-L-U-P????? I was sad, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that maybe I'm the first Philip she's ever met... or signed autographs for. Maybe I'm more forgiving because she said she loved me. Ok, she didn't really say it out loud, but she wrote it on my poster... Ok ok ok.... she didn't say she loved me EXACTLY, but she drew a heart before her name. I only met her for 5 seconds, but I guess we made that connection.

Tuesday, October 04, 2005

Sorry for the delay. I actually haven't had much time for xanga lately. Here are the long awaited "answers" to the story. They're actually very simple:

Captain - Leadership

Crew Member - Logic

Swimmer - Business

Wife - Romance/Love

Husband - Morality

What does this mean about you? You decide. The first time I took this test (like 10 years ago) I somehow voted the husband first. I think that when I retold the story I didn't develop the husband much thinking he had an unfair advantage. I guess now he just seems like a jerk.

Thanks for playing!
